SERC Students Visit Construction Site

Extended Diploma in Construction students from South Eastern Regional College’s Bangor Campus recently visited the Oaklee Housing development on Central Avenue, Bangor.

The visit provided the students with an opportunity to see close up the daily operations of a live construction site.

On the site approximately 45 apartments are being built and the construction is being carried out by MSM Contracts, Portadown.

Project Manager Donard Leonard showed students around the site, highlighting the machinery involved in the construction process. They then looked at the project planning chart to monitor the predicted progress against the actual progress, while within the building they looked at some of its sustainable features.

Donard also demonstrated how the project was working to achieve Level 3 status for the 'Code for Sustainable Housing'.

Simon Cummings, Assistant Head of School for Construction and Engineering Services said: "I would like to thank MSM Contracts for providing us with an opportunity to visit the construction site. Getting on site allows the students to relate what they learn in the classroom with the actual workplace. We plan to return to the site at a later date to see how the work is progressing."
