Committee Meet To Discuss Gas Network Development

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications will today meet with representatives of Bord Gáis Networks (BGN) to discuss its work in connecting homes and businesses to Ireland's gas network.

The representatives from BGN will outline the structure of the gas network, which currently supplies about 13 percent Ireland's energy needs, and the steps planned for further development of the network.

Chairman of the Committee Tom Hayes TD said: "Our Committee has an important role in considering the policy matters of state agencies.Supplying over 600,000 residential customers and over 20,000 industrial and commercial customers, our natural gas network is a vital piece of national infrastructure. It is notable that Ireland consumes relatively less natural gas than the European average and carbon emissions from gas are about one third less than oil.

"The meeting with Bord Gáis Networks representatives provides us with an opportunity to engage with senior officials who oversee the delivery of our natural gas network. Our Committee will wish to explore with the BGN representatives the further development of a safe, efficient and sustainable network."
