Free Legal Help For Those Who Face Losing Their Home |
|
People who face the threat of losing their homes in repossessions or evictions are to be given free legal advice from housing rights specialists.
The Department of Justice in Northern Ireland is spending £60,000 on starting up two posts for lawyers who will attend court to help people who cannot afford legal advice otherwise.
Justice Minister David Ford said this would keep "sound advice" open to all.
He said: "As pressure on public finances continues to grow, it is important to make the best and most effective use of the money available. By looking at how publicly funded legal services are provided, I have been able to provide this support and assistance so that families who find themselves in financial difficulties in these challenging circumstances can receive sound advice at court."

Minister for Social Development Nelson McCausland welcomed the creation of the posts.
The independent Housing Rights Service is mainly funded by his department.
Mr McCausland said: "As the economic downturn tightens its grip, advice for those facing mortgage difficulties has become increasingly sought after and this additional support by the Department of Justice will complement the work of my Department and demonstrates the real value of joined up government.
But he warned: "Repossession should always be the last resort and I would urge anyone experiencing mortgage difficulties to access the services available through the Mortgage Debt Advice Service, as prevention is always better than cure."
