Ferris To Raise Need To Resolve Turf Cutting Impasse

The Sinn Féin spokesperson on Rural Affairs Martin Ferris TD has tabled a Dáil motion to debate the ongoing impasse regarding turf cutting.

Deputy Ferris has said that there is an urgent need to resolve the issue given the current ban being imposed and the intention of turf cutters to continue to assert their traditional rights to cut turf on the affected bogs.

Deputy Ferris said:"The government needs to intervene directly given its commitment earlier in the year to implement a compromise. The EU authorities also need to be engaged given that the situation has come about as a consequence of an EU Directive. To that end Sinn Féin will be raising the issue in the Parliament through our MEP Martina Anderson.

"Turf cutters have accused the government of bad faith and of having reneged on commitments made on foot of a Private Members Motion several months ago. It is claimed that that was over-ruled by Brussels. Clearly then Minister Deenihan needs to take this up with the EU officials and to ensure that the directive takes fully into account all of the conditions pertaining to turf cutting here and environmental issues."
